AUBURN — Following the arrest of Auburn sophomore wide receiver Malcolm Simmons on July 16, head coach Hugh Freeze spoke for the first time on Simmons’ situation as the Tigers kicked off fall camp on Wednesday morning.

“Based on the information that I’ve been given from our administration that have knowledge of the matter, he’s been cleared to participate in team activities,” Freeze said. “That’s all the information I have.”

The initial report from Simmons’ arrest cited charges of domestic assault with strangulation or suffocation, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. His bond was set of $20,000.

Simmons recorded 451 yards receiving on 40 receptions with three touchdowns in his first season.

The former four-star wide receiver signed with Auburn out of Alexander City, Ala., as part of the Tigers’ 2024 class. In his freshman season, Simmons played a key role as a return specialist and as a receiver.
