Recruiting Prediction: Auburn to land No. 2-ranked wide receiver

Four-star wide receiver Jase Mathews is set to announce his commitment on Friday, Aug. 8.
Mathews, who attends Greene County High School in Leakesville, Miss., will choose one of Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
Each of his final four schools has received buzz at some point throughout his recruitment, more Auburn, LSU and A&M than in-state Ole Miss. And in the past week or so, Auburn and LSU seem to have risen to the top, according to sources close to Mathews’s recruitment.
Auburn has been a serious contender for Mathews dating back to a November gameday visit. He since has returned to campus at least three times, including an official visit in June.
Mathews has a very strong bond with Auburn wide receivers coach Marcus Davis.
“He’s my guy,” Mathews said in June. “Me and Coach Davis stay in touch. We talk at least twice a week. He’s a young coach and we have built a good connection. It just gets stronger day by day.
“He showed me things I can do to get better. He also gave me some life tips outside of football and is telling me I’m a priority.”

Mathews also has strong bonds with Hugh Freeze and Auburn director of recruiting research and strategy Kenyatta Watson. And don’t forget about his relationship with Auburn freshman quarterback Deuce Knight. The two are close friends, both being from Mississippi, and that relationship is big in Mathews’s recruitment.
Auburn is expected to sign a small wide receiver class in 2026, likely two. Mathews is No. 1 on the board.
Auburn has made him a priority. The financial commitment is there. Mathews has close relationships with the coaches and players and is very familiar with the campus.
For all those reasons, I think the Tigers could be the team to beat less than two weeks before he commits. Could that change? Absolutely. But for now, I like Auburn’s chances.
I have logged a prediction for the Tigers with a 55% confidence level.
