HUGH THUMB

Did Auburn strain enough Saturday?

Some would say the Tigers strained too much during their 42-3 victory over hapless Ball State last weekend. Some early sluggishness on the offensive side of the ball resulted in a less-than-inspiring, 21-0 halftime lead.

Still, coach Hugh Freeze actually wanted to see more straining. What he means is that he wants to see players playing though the whistle, which is requiring an adjustment after being slowed by quick whistles in practice. Blocks must be held longer. Routes must be finished. Everything must be done at a higher level.

Freeze also speaks about a freak injury to tailback Durell Robinson, his plans for Omar Mabson now that he’s the de facto No. 3 tailback, a big game from safety Sly Smith and some chatter about the Tigers’ passing game.
