Former Gator Chauncey Gardner-Johnson returns to NFC North
The Chicago Bears have added a notable player to their defense, signing former Florida Gators standout Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. He visited the team on Tuesday before finalizing the deal. Per ESPN, the signing was confirmed after the network spoke with Gardner-Johnson’s agents.
The move reunites Gardner-Johnson with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who coached him during his early years with the New Orleans Saints.
Gardner-Johnson was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent several seasons in New Orleans before joining the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2022 season. He later had a stint in Detroit before returning to the Eagles in 2024 and winning Super Bowl LIX.

Earlier this year, he was traded to the Houston Texans but spent only three weeks with them before being released. His time with the Baltimore Ravens was brief too, as the veteran safety was released from the Ravens’ practice squad after just one week.
Known for his aggressive play and ability to create turnovers, Gardner-Johnson made his mark in Gainesville as a physical defensive back. In the NFL, he’s built a reputation as a hard-hitting, emotional defender who can change a game.

Now with Chicago, Gardner-Johnson will look to earn meaningful playing time. He brings experience and energy to a Bears defense that’s banged up in the secondary.
