And who said you never use your math skills after school!

A few days removed from visiting the University of Florida after playing in Super Bowl LVII with the Philadelphia Eagles, former Gators defensive back Chauncey “C.J.” Gardner-Johnson schooled his college rival, ex-Georgia receiver Mecole Hardman, on the order of operations for mathematical expressions.

Hardman was the first to share this tweet Monday from the account RapHouseTV: What’s the Right/Correct Answer to This Math Question? 6 / 2 (1+2) =

The Kansas City Chiefs WR quote tweeted the question and wrote that it equals 1. Moments later, Gardner-Johnson shared the same tweet with a different answer.

Hardman replied to that tweet and doubled down with his answer of 1. Gardner-Johnson responded with the confused John C. Reilly GIF, and then the two began a back-and-forth debate on the order of operations!

“You can’t just ignore the 3 that’s sitting there in parentheses,” Hardman wrote. “I didn’t bro lol,” Garnder-Johnson said.

“Ok so if you didn’t you gotta take attention to the (3) first which mean you gotta do 2(3) first in order to get rid of the parentheses which leaves you 6 / 6,” Hardman said.

“What’s 3•3 …..,” Gardner-Johnson asked. Hardman replied, “You divided 6/2 before getting rid of the parentheses that’s how you getting 3(3) which equals 9.”

So, who’s right? The player who attended a top-five public university, of course. The PEMDAS acronym, however, is taught in grade school. Hardman has since deleted his initial post, but the exchanges above as well as his replies saying “he’s wrong” and “It’s 1 y’all tripping” are still up (for now).

Once the 1+2 in parentheses is taken care of, 6 / 2 (3) remains. Multiplication or division have equal precedence, so therefore, the problem is solved from left to right: 6 / 2 = 3, and then 3 x 3 = 9. Here’s a video from a mathematician explaining this problem that recently went viral.

Gardner-Johnson was back in Gainesville on Saturday to visit with UF coach Billy Napier and the Gators football team on the first day of spring practice.
