Gators quarterback DJ Lagway plans to enter the transfer portal
Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway, a sophomore starter from Willis, Texas, plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal in January, Gators Online has learned.
At this time, his return to UF doesn’t seem likely. The transfer portal opens Jan. 2.
Lagway started all 12 games for UF in 2025 and seven as a true freshman in 2024. This past season, he completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. As a true freshman, Lagway passed for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
All told, he is 10-9 as a starter with the Gators.
Lagway released the following statement Monday:
When the Gators introduced Jon Sumrall as coach, Lagway sat in the back of the room on Dec. 1 as Sumrall spoke to the media. Later that week, the Gators hired Buster Faulkner of Georgia Tech to be offensive coordinator. Sumrall and Faulkner have both met with Lagway since.
Lagway signed with the Gators as a heralded 5-star recruit in the 2024 class. He was the No. 1 quarterback and No. 3 overall recruit nationally for Rivals after a record-setting career at Willis High. Lagway was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year.

But after showing great promise as a true freshman, Lagway had an offseason to forget. He was unable to throw during spring practice due to what then-coach Billy Napier called a lower body/shoulder issue that needed rest. Then, Lagway injured his calf just before the start of preseason camp. Because of that he entered the season without having competed in a live scrimmage.
Lagway started the season slowly, then had a solid outing in a win over No. 9 Texas (298 yards, two touchdowns). However, he was unable to sustain any momentum and was benched after throwing three first-half interceptions vs. Kentucky later in the season. Lagway finished the 2025 campaign with one of his most efficient games as a sophomore. In a 40-21 win over FSU at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, he went 15 of 24 for 168 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.
