The Florida Gators have lost a commitment as 3-star defensive lineman Jamir Perez of Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville has backed off his pledge to UF and flipped to Ohio State. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Perez had been committed to Florida since May 18. He is the No. 61 defensive line recruit in the country for the On3 Industry Rankings.

This development was not unexpected. Within two weeks after committing to Florida, Perez scheduled an official visit with Ohio State. That visit took place June 13-15. At that time, confidence began to grow with the Buckeyes.

Meanwhile, the impact of this de-commitment is minimal for Florida. That’s because the Gators landed a commitment from Fort Myers (Fla.) 4-star recruit Kendall Guervil, the top defensive lineman on the UF board, earlier this week.

Here is a complete look at the Florida commitment list.

Perez gave the Gators his verbal on the final day of his official visit to UF two months ago. “For me, see, I’m from Ohio. I had Ohio State and being an Ohio kid, that’s usually the dream, but I always dreamed of playing in the SEC,” Perez told Gators Online’s Blake Alderman. “I feel like I’m an SEC type of body, I’m an SEC type of player. Florida just made it home.”

Perez’s relationship with Florida defensive line coach Gerald Chatman was something else that helped Florida land his commitment.

“I saw the vision, coach Chatman made me see the vision, everybody else made me see the vision. I’m home,” said Perez. “I told coach Napier and he was happy. I told a couple of the players here last night that I was going to do it. Once I told coach, he was hype about it and ready for it. Now, it’s time to put in that work.”
