Where ESPN ranks Florida’s DJ Lagway among Power 4 quarterbacks

Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway, a former 5-star prospect and the No. 1-ranked prospect at his position, has struggled through the 2025 season and is showing it in the national rankings.
On Wednesday, ESPN updated its Power Four quarterback rankings and placed Lagway at No. 55 out of 68, up from No. 61.
Through six games, Lagway has thrown for 1,762 yards, rushed for 138 yards (excluding sacks) and accounted for 11 total touchdowns; however, inconsistency and turnovers have plagued him in a major way. He was even replaced by freshman Tramell Jones during last week’s loss to Kentucky, highlighting the team’s need for more stability at quarterback.
Florida Gators Football Coaching Hot Board
“You know it’s a lost season when your passes don’t really go anywhere (10.3 yards per completion, 116th nationally), but you’re still near the bottom in interception rate (4.5%, 129th) and you’re taking plenty of sacks (5.0% sack rate, 61st). Lagway was excellent in the upset of Texas, but his Total QBR has sunk back to 56.2 since then,” ESPN wrote on Wednesday.
Being ranked 55 out of 68 shows how far Lagway has fallen from his top prospect status. With Florida searching for answers at quarterback, the next few games will show whether he can get back on track or if Jones will take over as the starter. Beyond that, Florida’s next coach might need to find a signal caller in the transfer portal. There is plenty of uncertainty in the Gators’ quarterback room right now.

Billy Gonzales addressed Florida’s quarterback plans for Ole Miss
“Right now in my mind, (DJ Lagway’s) going to take 1 reps when we go out to practice [Monday],” Florida Gators interim head coach Billy Gonzales said during his weekly press conference. “But again, competition is great for everybody.”
Gonzales also commented on Jones’ performance, praising the freshman for battling through a difficult situation while also showing flashes of growth.

“I thought he did a fantastic job. That was his first SEC play. To get out there and getting a chance to take the team, lead the team, (it was) a learning experience for him. Just like I said, for DJ to get a chance to refocus on the sideline and look and see from a different point of view (was beneficial).
“I think it’s always going to be best and you’re going to put yourself in a position to be better by getting reps. That was his chance to get some reps in a game situation and it will continue that way over his time here at the University of Florida.”
