Florida pitcher Keagan Rothrock (7) reacts after giving up a home run to Texas utility Katie Stewart (20) in the sixth inning of a Women's College World Series softball game between the Texas Longhorns and the Florida Gators at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, Thursday, May 29, 2025.

The Florida Gators’ quest for a softball national championship took a hit Thursday as UF fell to Texas 3-0 in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Florida, now 48-16, is headed to the loser’s bracket and will need to win Friday to stay alive in the event.

Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan was dominant Thursday. She held the big-hitting Gators to just two singles in a complete game gem. Kavan only struck out one but got Florida to hit into one ground out after the other while improving to 25-5. The Gators entered the game hitting .339 as a team and had 107 home runs on the season.

Meanwhile, Texas (52-11) delivered three homers off Florida starter Keagan Rothrock, who fell to 16-7. Two of those home runs came off the bat of first baseman Joley Mitchell — one in the second inning and the other in the sixth. Left fielder Katie Stewart also homered for the Longhorns.

Outfielders Taylor Shumaker and Korbe Otis delivered the Florida Gators’ only hits Thursday. The rest of the team went 0 for 17 against Kavan.
