GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators landed a big commitment out of the portal on Sunday from Ole Miss transfer Ethan Surowiec. The sophomore infielder announced his decision on Instagram.

Surowiec hit .375 as a freshman with two homers and eight RBI but is killing it this summer in the Northwoods League, where he’s hitting .427 with seven home runs and 36 RBI in 96 at bats.

“It’s huge power and is off to an awesome start in the Northwoods League,” Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement previously said of Surowiec in a sit-down with the Ole Miss Spirit. “He’s off to an awesome start up there. … I look for him to take a huge step forward. He needs the at-bats just to transition into his sophomore year.”

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Surowiec entered the transfer portal earlier this week and has three years of eligibility remaining, though he will be draft eligible after his sophomore season. He’s playing summer ball with the Duluth Huskies. Surowiec currently has 15 doubles and two triples with them as well, leading to an impressive .844 slugging percentage and 1.357 OPS. He also has eight stolen bases this summer.

Surowiec marks the ninth addition for the Gators from the transfer portal and their third commitment in three days. They’ve also landed Jacksonville center fielder Jaden Bastian, Columbia shortstop Sam Miller, Notre Dame RHP Ricky Reeth, Central Florida RHP Russell Sandefer, Hawaii RHP pitcher Cooper Walls, TCU catcher Karson Bowen, Lenoir-Rhyne catcher Cole Stanford and JUCO catcher AJ Malzone.

Surowiec is expected to start at third base with Miller at shortstop, Cade Kurland returning from season-ending injury at second base and Brendan Lawson at first base to make up Florida’s infield lineup.
