GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida quarterback Micah Leon is getting a shot in the NFL. Leon, a preferred walk-on at UF, has signed a camp invitation with the Miami Dolphins.

Leon will participate in the team’s minicamp on a tryout basis, joining UTEP quarterback Gavin Hardison, who signed a standard contract.

Leon impressed former Florida coach Steve Spurrier during fall training camp, with Spurrier hinting that he could get some playing time.

Graham Mertz I guess is our starter right now,” Spurrer said last year in an interview with Inside The Gators. “I like the other kid that has come on, I think his last name is Leon. He was like the third or so, but it seems like coach [Billy] Napier said, every time he’s in there the ball goes up and down the field a good way. So don’t be surprised if Leon doesn’t play some here real soon.”

Leon completed 2 of 3 pass attempts for 16 yards in a win over McNeese last season, his only appearance as a Gator after three years at UConn as the program’s backup quarterback.

Leon was a former walk-on at NC State and transferred to UConn on scholarship. He made collegiate debut vs. Houston Nov. 27, 2021, completing 10 of 13 pass attempts for 62 yards.

Leon left UConn following the 2021 season and spent a year out of football. Eventually he headed to Gainesville as a graduate transfer last January, impressing both Spurrier and Napier.

“First of all, the guy is an experienced player, he’s played some football in the past,” Napier said in fall camp. “Micah is a guy that wanted to go to graduate school at the University of Florida, had aspirations considering coaching to some degree.

“So, a guy that brought a lot to that room, you know, and I think we are always looking for guys like him. Now, Micah has proved to be very effective. He’s smart, he’s a student of the game, guy throws a really good ball. And man, these scrimmages he just moves the ball right down the field every time. Micah has done a really nice job and we’ve given him some reps and he’s made the most of those reps.”

Leon was the starting quarterback for Boca Raton High School, where he helped his team to an appearance in the 3A Florida State Championship game during his junior season. He threw for 1,085 yards with 11 touchdowns and rushed for an additional 555 yards and 11 scores during his senior campaign.

Leon was the starting QB for the Palm Beach County All-Star game and was also the starter in the 2016 Senior All American Game in Dallas, Texas. He was invited to the Nike Opening Regional Elite Quarterback Camp and was named the Marine Corps Player of the Game.
