The keys to the car now are in the hands of Billy Gonzales. The longtime assistant, named interim coach of the Florida Gators after Billy Napier was fired Oct. 19, will coach his first game against No. 5 Georgia Saturday in this year’s edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

“Guys have been back on the football field after last week’s bye. They’ve been doing a fantastic job, a lot of energy, lot of excitement going on right now, and we’re excited to have an opportunity to go play up in Jacksonville this weekend,” Gonzales said.

Napier was just 22-23 in three-and-a-half seasons, and 0-3 vs. Georgia. In those games, his closest defeat was 14 points. The Gators enter this game unranked at 3-4 overall, 2-2 in the SEC. But they are coming off a 23-21 win over Mississippi State and two weeks prior to that beat Texas, which was then in the top 10, 29-21. So it’s not like this UF team doesn’t have talent.

But while the Florida defense has had a solid season, the offense has been hit or miss. The Gators average just 363.0 yards (93rd nationally) and 22.4 points (105th) a game. With Napier out, quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara now will call the plays and there is optimism UF will play more aggressively and with more of an up-tempo style.

Georgia is 6-1, 4-1 and once again is squarely in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth. But this is a dangerous game for the Bulldogs. Unlike in recent meetings with Florida, Georgia doesn’t seem to have a significant talent edge. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs could easily have one or two more losses; Tennessee missed a late field goal to beat them.

The bottom line: It should be another exciting cocktail party in Jacksonville.

Gators-Bulldogs game notes

*Georgia leads the all-time series with UF, 56-44-2. However, the Gators are 22-13 vs. the Bulldogs since 1990.

*UF last beat Georgia in 2020.

*Gonzales is the seventh interim head coach in Gators football history. He follows Greg Knox (2021: 1-1), Randy Shannon (2017: 1-3), DJ Durkin (2014: 1-0), Charlie Strong (2004: 0-1), Gary Darnell (1989: 3-4) and Galen Hall (1984: 8-0). Hall is the only one who ultimately was kept to continue as head coach the following season.

*Georgia is the Gators’ fifth top-10 and fourth top-five opponent this season, the latter being a program record. And that number could rise. One future opponent, Ole Miss, currently is ranked No. 7.

*Interim UF coaches have gone 4-2 in their debut games. But none beat a ranked opponent. They are 3-3 vs. ranked teams overall, with the highest-ranked win being vs. No. 8 Georgia in 1984 (Hall). UF won that game 27-0. This will be the first time a UF interim coach has faced a top-five opponent.

Florida has won five-straight games as the home team in SEC play dating back to last season (home in Week

*Florida is 2-5 against the spread this season.

*Florida is undefeated (11-0) when scoring 22 or more points since the 2024 season.

*As an unranked team, Florida’s last upset over an AP Top 5 opponent was on Nov. 2, 2002 vs. No. 5 Georgia (20-13).
