The Florida Gators are down, but not out. Following last week’s loss at home to USF, UF must get off the mat and in a hurry because Saturday’s game at Tiger Stadium vs. No. 3 LSU might be the ultimate test for Billy Napier’s team. The Tigers (2-0), who rebuilt through the transfer portal this offseason, are fast and physical, and feature a potential Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback in Garrett Nussmeier.

They also have an early quality win at Clemson.

Meanwhile, the Gators (1-1) enter this one coming off one of the most humbling losses of the Napier era. But the program still has lofty goals that remain attainable, however only if UF starts winning on the field.

“Big-time challenge going into Baton Rouge Saturday, and I think as a competitor, these are the opportunities that you dream of,” Napier said. “Got a ton of respect for LSU, coach [Brian] Kelly, his staff and their team, and this will require us to be at our best.”

Florida-LSU Game Notes

*Coincidentally, it was a 27-16 win over then-No. 21 LSU at The Swamp last season that righted the ship after a rocky start in Gainesville. The Gators were better than the Tigers on big plays and roughed up Nussmeier to kick-start a four-game winning streak to close the season. The hope was that momentum would carry over into 2025. So far, it has not.

*To win in Baton Rouge, the Gators will have to figure out how to attack a stingy LSU defense. Florida is averaging 403 yards per game, 13th in the SEC. LSU is giving up only 207.5.

*Quarterback DJ Lagway is still working back into form after missing much of the offseason with two injuries. So far, he’s 38 of 51 this season [74.5 percent] but for only 342 yards. He’s averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. Last season, Lagway averaged 10.0 yards per attempt.

*If the Gators have reason for optimism, some of it certainly rests with its front seven on defense. Florida, which has standout end Caleb Banks back from injury for the first time this season, is facing an LSU offensive line that has struggled early. Banks recorded a sack, seven QB pressures, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery vs. the Tigers in 2024.

* Florida’s record is 12-10 when playing the Tigers in Baton Rouge since 1981. But the Gators have dropped three straight there.

*The all-time series is tied at 34-34-3.
