Florida's Xaivian Lee joins elite candidates for Jerry West Award
Florida guard Xaivian Lee earned national recognition on Tuesday, as he was named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Preseason Top 20 list, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced. The award is part of the Naismith Starting 5, which honors the top players at each position in college basketball.
Lee, a transfer from Princeton, brings proven experience to Gainesville. The senior guard averaged 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists last season. That led to his second straight first-team All-Ivy League honor. Over three seasons with the Tigers, the Toronto native totaled 1,154 points, 406 rebounds, 302 assists and 124 made threes.
He’s the second Gator this week to be recognized by the Naismith Starting 5 awards, joining point guard Boogie Fland, who appeared on the Bob Cousy Award watch list Monday.
The Jerry West Award has been given out annually since 2015. Last season, Florida’s Alijah Martin appeared on the midseason list.
