With the success that former Florida Gators first baseman Pete Alonso has had in the MLB, it seemed like a matter of time before he would get his big payday. The former New York Met was unable to reach an agreement on a long-term deal with the team following the 2025 season, making him a free agent. Alonso’s big break finally came, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the five-time MLB All-Star is signing with the Baltimore Orioles. According to Passan, Batlimore and Alonso are in the process of finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract.

Pete Alonso and Baltimore would make history with this deal

The Orieoles have not officially announced the signing of Pete Alonso yet. According to MLB.com’s Jake Rill, the lack of that official word is due to a pending physical. This deal is noteworthy not just for Pete Alonso and Baltimore, but also due to the fact that it makes him the most expensive player at his position all time.

“BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan said via X when the news broke. “Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.

“Pete Alonso’s deal with the Orioles gives him the highest AAV ever for a first baseman. He winds up with $185 million, including his $30 million salary last year.”

Furthermore, this deal will also be the second-largest financial commitment made in the history of the Orioles.

Alonso bounced back in 2025 after his numbers dipped in 2024

Pete Alonso brings a bit bat to an Orioles offense that underperformed this past season. The former Florida Gators slugger is a five-time All-Star and won his first National League Silver Slugger Award in 2025. In that season, he hit .272 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBIs in 162 games.

Those numbers are a big jump from accounting for some of his worst as a major leaguer in 2024. In that season, Pete Alonso hit for full-season career lows in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, and on-base plus slugging.

Pete Alonso played all 7 of his MLB years with the New York Mets and has accounted for a total of 264 homers. He’s hit at least 34 home runs in his last 5 seasons at the professional level. Since Alonso made his MLB debut back in 2019, only two players have hit more home runs: Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber. He’s been one of the best power hitters in baseball over the past six seasons. His 264 home runs are the most in Mets franchise history, breaking Darryl Strawberry’s previous record this past season.

Pete Alonso played his college years in Gainesville and was drafted in the second round (pick 64 overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft. Alonso played at Florida from 2014-2016. In his college career, Alonso hit .316 with 34 doubles, 23 home runs, and 124 RBIs.
