GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Gators opened fall camp on Monday and their first practice including the final four high school signees from their 2023 class. One of them, cornerback Dijon Johnson, started out with a bang.

According to Johnson’s former high school coach, Mike Williams Sr., the Under Armour All-American had a pair of pick-6s in his first practice with Florida.

After Monday’s session, Williams posted a photo on social media of Johnson in his No. 26 jersey inside the Condron Family Indoor Practice Facility.

“First Camp practice… 2 pick 6’s! You’re just getting started 2-6!” Williams wrote.

It’s unclear what portion of practice Johnson made the interceptions and who threw them. Gators Online has projected Johnson to play with the second-team defense in fall training camp.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Johnson flipped from Ohio State to Florida during his recruitment and was one of the highest-ranked signees in the Gators’ 2023 class. He was the No. 12 cornerback and No. 115 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Player Rankings.

“Dijon Johnson, I think, is a very unique player for his size. Plays corner, very physical, can make a play on the ball,” UF coach Billy Napier said on signing day. “A guy that you put him up there and he can put his hands on you. He’s great in press coverage. I think he’s instinctive, he’s a great tackler, and he makes plays on the ball. Had a phenomenal year there.”

Williams coached Johnson at Tampa Wharton High School, where led the Wildcats to three straight playoff appearances, including a region final berth in 2021. He’s now the head coach at Robinson School and was at Middleton in 2019 before three seasons at Wharton.

Williams was a former star at Plant who went on to become a first-round pick with the Detroit Lions after playing at Southern Cal, where he was the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (2002) and first-team All-Pac-10 in 2003. He spent a total of five years in the NFL.

Williams was also in Gainesville on June 11 and shared a photo from Johnson’s locker in the new football facility after he enrolled at the University of Florida.
