GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA —Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, who shined in a 29-21 win over then-No. 9 Texas last Saturday despite playing with some type of leg injury, is “doing fine,” according to UF coach Billy Napier.

“Just some things we’ll work our way through this week, but in general nothing that’s going to prevent him from practicing,” Napier said Monday.

Lagway had a noticeable limp at times against the Longhorns, but did not miss a play despite getting looked at in the injury tent in the first half. He completed 21 of 28 passes for 298 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception against the Longhorns. Outside of a fourth-quarter pick with UF leading by 15, he was nearly flawless in the win.

For his effort, Lagway was named the SEC offensive player of the week.

“I think the one throw to (Eugene Wilson) over there on their sideline was probably not the best decision. Outside of that he was pretty clean. He communicated better, he played within the system, he threw a ton of completions. He played on time, which was impressive to me. And the staff designed a really good plan in terms of getting the first guy open on a consistent basis. … Definitely his best performance of the year.”

DJ Lagway had a strong outing from start to finish vs. the Longhorns

Against Texas, Lagway started fast. He completed all four of his passes on the opening drive, which ended with a UF touchdown and a 7–0 lead. By halftime, Florida (2–3) led 19–7, with Lagway 13 of 17 for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Through five games, he’s now 104 of 151 for 988 yards, 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Five of his picks came in a 20-10 loss to LSU.

“Man, it feels great,” Lagway said after the win over Texas. “It’s always great to get a W, especially in the Swamp in front of these amazing fans.”

For Lagway and the Gators, the next step is ensuring that latest performance becomes the standard. Both he and his coach hope the win serves as a springboard with tougher games ahead — starting with next week’s trip to unbeaten Texas A&M.

“We got a little momentum, we’ve got to continue to work hard,” Lagway said. “Next week is a whole new challenge. We’ve got to build forth from there and just continue to work hard.”
