Florida Gators EDGE George Gumbs Jr. will have surgery this week on his right knee, Gators Online has confirmed. According to a person close to Gumbs, “it’s not anything serious.”

While surgery this late in the season would seem likely to end Gumbs’ 2025 campaign, the source noted it might not be entirely out of the question that Gumbs is able to return for UF’s finale Nov. 29 vs. FSU. “I wouldn’t rule it out yet,” the person said.

Gumbs, a redshirt senior, leads UF with 6.5 tackles for loss and is second on the team with 2.5 sacks. He has 31 total tackles, with 14 solo stops.

Monday, Gumbs discussed this week’s game vs. Tennessee with the media in Gainesville. His belief was having played an up-tempo team in Ole Miss last week would benefit the Gators on Saturday.

“I feel like that will definitely help just having some practice at it,” Gumbs said. “I feel like we’re going against an up tempo team, we’ve got to win on first and second down. You get in those games, small gains on first and second down, you’re really not going nowhere. So it’s really hard to go tempo when you do that, so I feel like that will be effective.”

Per his official UF bio, here are Gumbs’ highlights this season:

  • vs. LIU: Started the season opener for the Gators on the defensive line, recording two tackles (one solo), a quarterback hurry, 0.5 sacks and 1.5 TFLs for four yards across 18 total snaps. Breaking past his previous PFF Defensive grade (81.1) with a 91.9 grade.
  • vs. USF: Recorded three tackles (one solo) and a quarterback hurry, in 51 total snaps (40 defensive and 11 special teams) as the Gators starting edge. Earned a PFF Tackle grade of 76.6 against the Bulls.
