The Florida Gators have landed a key piece in the trenches, as interior offensive lineman Desmond Green of Saint Stephen (S.C.) Timberland announced his commitment on Thursday. His pledge gives the Gators a physical presence up front and another key win on the recruiting trail.

This decision comes not long after Green’s official visit in Gainesville, which he rated a “10.” It was far from his first time on campus though, as Green had already made several visits to UF dating back to last year. That familiarity and comfort played a major role in helping Florida separate itself from the competition.

Georgia, South Carolina and Oklahoma were also in the mix, especially the Bulldogs. Sources close to the recruitment, however, believed Florida pulled ahead coming out of Green’s official visit. Now, the Gators have officially landed the rising senior’s commitment.

“Florida really grew on me a lot the last few months,” Green told On3’s Chad Simmons. “Before I started official visits, back in the spring, I was keeping it even, but everyone was thinking Georgia was the school. I went to Florida for a spring practice and I liked it a lot.

“Then on the official visit, I knew it. It hit me like a semi truck… Florida was the school for me. I had that feeling and I could not say no to it. I had a different feeling. I fell in love with everything at Florida. From the school to the people to the tradition to the staff to the stadium to the trees – everything made me feel like home.”

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Green is the No. 37 interior offensive lineman and No. 454 overall prospect.

Listed at 6-foot-4.5, 350 pounds, Green is a true interior prospect who brings a punishing style of play. He’s known for his toughness, physicality and ability to control defenders at the point of attack. His skill set perfectly complements Florida’s current group of offensive line commits, which includes fellow interior lineman G’Nivre Carr and offensive tackles Chancellor Campbell, Javarii Luckas and Tyler Chukuyem.

Florida offensive line coaches Jonathan Decoster and Rob Sale put in quality time here, and it paid off. Desmond Green gives the Gators another building block as they continue to construct a balanced and physical offensive front.
