Florida runs away with 17-2 win over Fairfield in Conway Regional

The No. 2 seed Florida Gators kept their season alive Saturday and ended Fairfield’s year with a dominant 17-2 win over the Stags. UF finished with 16 hits on offense and received another clutch performance from pitcher Aidan King.

King allowed just one run and four hits with seven strikeouts in a career-high 8.0 innings. He became the first Florida pitcher throw into the eighth inning since Hurston Waldrep in the 2023 Super Regionals against South Carolina.

The Gators left the yard three times and Brendan Lawson led the team with five hits. Bobby Boser and Brody Doney both had two-run shots and their 18th homers of the season, while Blake Cyr hit UF’s first dinger of the game and finished with a team-high 4 RBI.

After three scoreless innings, Fairfield’s Matthew Bucciero also homered in the fourth to tie it up. Florida then put up a four-spot in the fifth, scored two runs in the sixth and ran away with the game with an eight-run eighth inning before adding two more in the ninth.

UF will face the loser of the Coastal Carolina-ECU game on Sunday. Below are live updates from the Gators (39-21, 15-15 SEC) against the Stags (39-19, 21-8 MAAC).

End of 9th: Florida 17, Fairfield 2

The Gators score two more runs in the ninth with an RBI single by Lawson, his fifth of the game, along with two Fairfield errors and a hit by pitch to load the bases once again. UF reliever Felix Ong took over in the ninth for King, who finished with seven Ks, four hits, one earned run and two walks in a career-high 8.0 innings (94 P, 59 S). The Stags added a run on sac fly with the bases loaded, but Ong ended the game with his second strikeout looking.

End of 8th: Florida 15, Fairfield 1

It was onslaught from the Gators, who scored eight runs with six different players as Fairfield made three pitching changes. Lawson and Cyr both hit 2 RBI singles and Yost also had an RBI base hit. UF loaded the bases multiple times and scored two runs on walks with a sac fly as well. King tossed his second straight 1-2-3 frame (fourth overall) and two more Ks to reach seven strikeouts and 94 pitches.

End of 7th: Florida 7, Fairfield 1

King threw his third 1-2-3 frame. He’s up to five Ks and has retired five in a row for the third time in this game. Boser singled to right field for his third hit but was left stranded after stealing second.

End of 6th: Florida 7, Fairfield 1

Brody Donay hit a two-run shot and his 18th dinger of the season after Boser did the same thing in the fifth. The Gators now have three homers in both of their games at the Conway Regional. UF left three on for the second straight inning as Fairfield made two pitching changes. King is up four strikeouts with two more in the sixth, including one against Bucciero after his homer in the fourth.

End of 5th: Florida 5, Fairfield 1

The Gators had a four-spot in the fifth and opened the inning with three straight hits and a walk. Bobby Boser blasted a two-run bomb, his second homer in as many days and team-high 18th of the season, to put UF back in front. Cyr then singled to left field to plate Lawson and Evans made it home on a fielder’s choice, forcing Fairfield to pull starting pitcher Bowen Baker after seven Ks, nine hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings. Florida had the bases jacked after back-to-back walks by reliever Matthew Grabmann but left them loaded. King tossed another 1-2-3 frame and has retired five Stags in a row.

End of 4th: Florida 1, Fairfield 1

Blake Cyr hit his ninth home run of the season to give UF the lead and Ashton Wilson was left on after his two-out double. The Stags tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with Matthew Bucciero’s dinger to center field.

End of 3rd: Florida 0, Fairfield 0

Lawson grounds out into a double play after Bobby Boser’s leadoff single, and then Ty Evans struck out swinging for Baker’s fifth K. After back-to-back walks by King, the Gators made another double play to end the inning.

End of 2nd: Florida 0, Fairfield 0

UF starting pitcher Aidan King tossed his first 1-2-3 frame has retired five of the first six Stags. Fairfield pitcher Bowen Baker struck out two more Gators in the second and he’s up to four Ks.

After singles by Brendan Lawson and Brody Donay, Fairfield’s shortstop snagged Blake Cyr’s hit for the last out and UF left two on. The Gators made a double play to end the inning.
