Florida's lead slips away after weather delay in 5-2 loss at Texas

A six-run first inning Friday was the difference in the Florida Gators‘ 8-2 win at Texas. On Saturday, a big inning from the Longhorns carried them to victory.

Following a two-hour weather delay in the bottom of the fifth with UF ahead 2-0, Texas scored five runs against four pitchers in the sixth to take the lead.

After a leadoff hit by the Gators in the first three innings, they had no hits in the last six frames and struck out 16 times. Six Florida pitchers threw just 8 Ks.

The Longhorns’ comeback win snapped their four-game losing streak in SEC play and clinched the SEC regular season title for the nation’s No. 1 team.

End of 9th: Texas 5, Florida 2

In his second inning of work, Dylan Volantis threw his third and fourth strikeout to end the game. The Florida Gators finished with just five hits as a team and zero in the final six innings.

End of 8th: Texas 5, Florida 2

The Longhorns pitch their fourth 1-2-3 frame in the last four innings. Ty Evans struck out looking and he’s 0-for-4 on Saturday. Rowland gave up a two-out double but finished with another scoreless frame.

End of 7th: Texas 5, Florida 2

The Gators stranded two via a walk and hit by pitch. Still no hits for UF since the leadoff single in the third. Freshman RHP Blaine Rowland replaced Philpott in the seventh and had a scoreless frame with one K.

End of 6th: Texas 5, Florida 2

Following a 1-2-3 frame for new Texas pitcher Thomas Burns, the Longhorns took the lead with a five-spot. They hit back-to-back homers against Rodriguez and Jackson Barberi, who was pulled after two pitches, and UF used two more pitchers in the sixth in Matthew Jenkins (12 TP) and Alex Philpott, who gave up a two-out double against Jonah Williams that emptied the bases for Texas.

End of 5th: Florida 2, Texas 0

After a lightning delay of 2 hours and 6 minutes, Christian Rodriguez took the mound for the Gators and threw two strikeouts to end the inning. Peterson had another start ended due to weather for the straight week.

End of 4th: Florida 2, Texas 0

The Gators finished without a hit for the first time Saturday. Peterson pitching another scoreless frame and he has three Ks through four with two hits and one walk allowed.

End of 3rd: Florida 2, Texas 0

The Gators had their third leadoff single before Texas pitcher Luke Harrison fanned two batters. Peterson tossed his third scoreless frame and also had a pair of strikeouts.

End of 2nd: Florida 2, Texas 0

The Gators scored the first runs of the game on back-to-back hits in the second by Ashton Wilson and Landon Stripling. The Longhorns flied out twice and popped up once.

End of 1st: Florida 0, Texas 0

Bobby Boser hit a leadoff single but then three Gators struck out consecutively. Peterson struck out his first batter faced, and the Longhorns left a runner stranded on third.
