Report: A.J. Erdely joining Gators staff as assistant QB coach
New Florida Gators offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is bringing a key member of his staff at Georgia Tech with him to Gainesville. Per FootballScoop’s John Brice, that person is A.J. Erdely.
Erdely will be UF’s assistant quarterbacks coach, according to Brice.
Erdely, a former UAB quarterback, was in his third season at Georgia Tech this year. He joined the Yellow Jackets in 2023 as an offensive analyst. A season later, he was named offensive assistant coach for quarterbacks.
With Georgia Tech, Erdely worked with quarterback Haynes King, who placed 10th this season in voting for the Heisman Trophy. King passed for 2,697 yards and rushed for 922 more in 2025.
Per Si.com, “King is the only power-conference player in the nation this season, and just the fifth since 1956, to average at least 240 passing yards and 80 rushing yards per game, according to sports-reference.com. Of the previous four power-conference players to accomplish the feat, three won the Heisman Trophy (LSU’s Jayden Daniels – 2023, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson – 2016 and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel – 2012), while the fourth, Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts in 2019, finished second in Heisman voting (Jackson also averaged 240 passing/80 rushing yards in 2017, when he was third in Heisman balloting).

King also ranks among the nation’s leaders this season in total offense (329.0 ypg – third), rushing by a QB (83.8 ypg – fifth and tops among power-conference players), scoring by a QB (8.2 ppg – third and tops among power-conference players) and rushing touchdowns, regardless of position (15 – tied for seventh). He leads the ACC in each of those categories, and was named ACC Quarterback of the Week five times in 11 games.”
Erdely also worked with Faulkner at Southern Miss in 2019 when Faulkner was offensive coordinator and Erdely was a quality control specialist.
As a player at UAB, Erdely was 15-6 as a starter. Per his Georgia Tech bio, Erdely was “a two-year captain and 2017 all-conference honoree (who) led the Blazers to the 2018 Conference USA championship and a pair of bowl berths. His 47 total touchdowns rank fifth in school history.”
