The Florida Gators are coming off an upset win at home against the Texas Longhorns. Texas entered the weekend ranked No. 9 in the country, but never led in the contest against the Gators. Following the latest round of games this past weekend, the SEC announced the conference players of the week, with three Gators making that list.

Three Florida Gators are SEC players of the week

Florida Gators sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway was announced as the offensive player of the week following the week 6 win. It was the best game of the season for Lagway, who threw for 298 yards with 21 completed passes off 28 attempts (75% completion rate) and a pair of touchdowns. Lagway posted the third-best quarterback rating of his career (180.8) while completing at least 75% of his passes for the second time in five starts this season.

Those passing touchdowns from Lagway went to freshman wide receiver Dallas Wilson, who was named the SEC freshman player of the week. Wilson missed UF’s first four games of the season due to injury, but made a statement in his debut against the Longhorns. Wilson had a game-high six receptions, 111 yards, and two touchdowns in his first collegiate game and start. Furthermore, he set Florida Gators records for receptions, yards, and touchdowns for a true freshman wide receiver in their first career start.

Florida Gators wide receiver Taylor Spierto was another recipient of SEC player of the week honors. Spierto was named the co-SEC player of the week for special teams. He blocked a punt to force a safety in the second quarter. That marked Florida’s first blocked punt since Derek Wingo did against Charlotte in 2023. It was also the Florida Gators’ first safety since 2023 against FSU, and the first blocked punt in SEC play since 2021.
