The Florida Gators parted ways with former head coach Billy Napier this past weekend, with five games left on the 2025 schedule. The Gators are 3-4 on the season, and amassed a record of 22-23 under Napier’s leadership. Florida is now in the middle of a search for its next football coach, with hopes of the next guy putting the program back in the conversation of a national championship.

Former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow joined ESPN’s SportsCenter on Saturday and discussed UF’s opening. The Florida great said that the program needs its “next great leader” at the helm. Tebow has seen the program achieve new heights during his years playing for the Orange and Blue. Knowing what is needed to win in The Swamp, Tim Tebow discussed some of the characteristics that he believes the next coach needs.

“You’ve got to find someone that can galvanize the fan base and bring Gator Nation back to where they want to go and back to where they’ve been,” Tebow said. “I also think it’s really important to understand that they’re not that far away. This is a Florida team that has a really good defense and a very talented offense.”

While the current record might not suggest it, Tim Tebow also thinks that Florida’s roster has more talent than one would think. With the pieces already there, Tebow thinks it should be an easy move for an elite coach to change the trajectory.

“They’re not that far away, but they’re going to need to find the next great leader. They’re going to find that person soon.”

Tebow is bullish on Florida’s young talent

Tim Tebow quickly pointed to the freshman wide receiver duo of Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson as two of the best young receivers in the country. He also praised Florida’s offensive line and the rushing attack headlined by sophomore Jadan Baugh. Though he’s struggled this year, Tim Tebow also still sees the potential of quarterback DJ Lagway.

“This cupboard is not bare, but you have to find someone that can really galvanize, and also keep these players in a time where it’s so easy to leave and transfer — and they have an opportunity to do that.”

If Florida can find the right coach, Tebow thinks that the Gators can compete as early as next season if whoever the Gators hire can keep those players in Gainesville.

“You need to find the next right coach that can inspire Gator Nation, keep these players and then bring in some more of them,” Tebow said. “Because this is a team that is very talented, offense, defense, special teams.
