Where ESPN ranks Florida’s DJ Lagway among Power 4 quarterbacks

One month into the 2025 season, Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is struggling to regain the form that made him a promising freshman.
After battling injuries in the offseason, Lagway has returned to the field. Through four games though, the results have been uneven. He has thrown for 690 yards, rushed for 23 yards, and accounted for five total touchdowns. Turnovers have been a major issue, highlighted by the five interceptions he threw against LSU. The pressure only grows this weekend as Florida hosts Texas in Gainesville.
Lagway’s struggles have drawn national attention. In ESPN’s recent Power 4 quarterback rankings, the former 5-star prospect is toward the bottom at No. 61.
“Lagway battled back from offseason injuries, but he has been a shadow of his freshman self,” said ESPN. “He’s making no big plays (8.3 yards per completion), his already-high interception and sack rates have gone up — he’s 127th in the former and 92nd in the latter — and his 1-3 Gators are projected favorites in just one more game. Barring an immediate course correction, this looks like a massive lost season.”
Florida head coach and play caller Billy Napier will have a big role in helping Lagway find consistency. The quarterback must reduce mistakes and make smarter decisions to get the offense moving. The Gators were supposed to have stability at the position this season, but so far it has been a struggle.

The next few games will be critical for Lagway and Florida. If he can cut down on turnovers and recapture some of the playmaking ability he showed as a freshman, the Gators will have the chance to win some games.
This weekend’s matchup against Texas is another test for him to prove he can lead the team and keep Florida competitive. At the same time though, the odds are stacked against the Gators.
