Wyatt Langford goes to injured list with mild oblique strain

Wyatt Langford, the Florida Gators baseball great now with the Texas Rangers, was placed on the injured list Friday with a mild oblique strain that has “been nagging him for the last couple of weeks,” per MLB.com. Langford, a first-round pick in 2023, started 46 of the Rangers’ 47 games from April 28-June 19 but then missed three recent games. His move to the IL is retroactive to June 25.
“It’s just the right thing to do with two days off,” Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young told MLB.com. “It shortens the amount of games missed. I think it’s just about getting this right on the front end. It’s a very low-grade oblique strain, something that’s right on the cusp of not IL-ing, but just kind of given how he’s feeling and the timing of the off-days, we felt like the right thing to do is to go the IL route and get this thing right.”
Langford also reportedly missed time with an oblique strain in April. And, he had similar physical troubles in spring training. The good news, according to MLB.com, “this current injury doesn’t feel nearly as bad as those two felt.”
Wyatt Langford started hot but has struggled of late
Langford, an outfielder for the Rangers, slashed .310/.397/.655 in April but has struggled at the plate since. MLB.com reports he is hitting just “.203 with a .626 OPS in his last 46 games dating back to May 1.” All told, Langford has a .232 batting average with 13 homers and 31 RBI to go along with 11 stolen bases in 67 games.

Per CBS Sports, “Langford underwent testing on his left side earlier this week, which revealed a mild strain in his oblique. He’s eligible to return from the IL on July 5, but oblique strains tend to take longer to heal, and Langford may need to get some reps on a rehab assignment before being cleared to return to the majors.”
Langford was selected fourth overall by the Rangers in the 2023 draft. He slashed .373/.498/.784/1.282 with 21 homers and 57 RBI for the Gators that year and was a unanimous First-Team All-American.
