Georgia vs Alabama has meant trophies for much of the last decade. There isn’t one on the line in Athens on Saturday, but this one will catch the eyes and roll off the tongues of those in the south for the next five days.

Georgia is coming off a bye week. Alabama was idle as well. The Bulldogs bested Tennessee in overtime 44-41, before taking a week off this week. The Crimson Tide suffered a week-one loss to Florida State. They have since earned wins over UL Monroe and Wisconsin.

The Bulldogs got a rest this week. Getting fresh was a key piece of the puzzle for Georgia this past week.

“We jumped into working on ourselves yesterday and got back to work,” Smart told reporters on Tuesday. “For an off week, we had a good practice yesterday, got a lot of reps for our twos and threes. And today we’ll get a lot of reps for everybody. That’s a work day, and work the rest of the week towards starting on our next opponent later in the week.”

Recent History

Alabama got the best of this matchup last season in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 28-0 lead before Georgia fought back and took a brief lead before Jalen Milroe hit Ryan Williams for a touchdown late. Carson Beck threw three interceptions on the day, but still threw for 439 yards and three touchdowns.

Georgia gets to play host to Alabama this time. The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs have collided four times in the last four years. Only one of those was on campus. That matchup was in Tuscaloosa last season. Alabama came away with the 41-34 win over the Bulldogs in the first post-Nick Saban matchup with Georgia.

The Crimson Tide hasn’t been to Athens since 2015.

Alabama leads the series 44-26-4 all-time. Georgia has only one win over the Crimson Tide in the seven meetings since Kirby Smart took over for Georgia. That gives Georgia a 1-6 record. The Bulldogs beat Alabama 33-18 in 2022 to win the National Championship game.
