Cole Speer one of the heroes in Georgia's SEC Championship win

Senior wide receiver Cole Speer set the tone in Georgia’s SEC Championship Game win on Saturday. He waited four years for an opportunity like the one he got on Saturday.

Speer broke free and got his hand on the ball as Alabama punter Blake Doud attempted to flip the field early in the game.

That punt block led to Georgia’s first touchdown of its 28-7 win over Alabama in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.

Speer was a star wide receiver at Calhoun. He committed to Georgia and never wavered as a recruit. It’s been that way as a player. Speer was a focal point of Calhoun’s offense in his time in high school. He had 59 receptions for 1,159 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior season in 2020.

Cole Speer leaves his mark

He hasn’t had the opportunities to catch the passes and score the touchdowns in Athens. Speer has five receptions for 56 yards in his college career.

Speer has left his mark on the 2025 Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had high praise for Speer following the game on Saturday.

“Just an unbelievable kid,” Smart told reporters on Saturday night. “I mean, he sacrificed so much for this program, I mean, it gets me emotional thinking about it…Coach (James) Coley talked about Cole Speer’s sacrifices. He got to be a really competitive receiver in the spring. Cole was playing really good, and then he got an injury in the spring game, and it set him back, and he never flinched. He never complains. He just does what he’s asked to do. He’s extremely fast and physical.”

Speer’s roommate, Gunner Stockton, also took note of Speer’s hard work.

“He’s one of my best friends,” Stockton said. “He’s one of my roommates. Just seeing all the hard work he’s put into this program and just seeing it pay off, it was definitely special.”
