While most eyes in Dawg Nation were on the NFL Draft, Georgia Baseball took care of business in Oxford. The Bulldogs beat defending national champion Ole Miss 7-3 to tie the series and force an important rubber game on Sunday with the series on the line.

Reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week Charlie Goldstein moved to 3-1 on the season as he picked up the win in front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 at Swayze Field. Goldstein, who came into the contest with an ERA of 0.55 in his last three outings including wins over No. 10 Kentucky and No. 5 Arkansas with a no decision against No. 2 Florida, allowed three runs on seven hits, throwing 7.0 innings.

Meanwhile, at the plate, Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third without the benefit of a hit. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batsman before Charlie Condon was hit by a pitch, picking up an RBI. That scored a run. Connor Tate and Parks Harber each added on with a sacrifice fly and a groundout.

Ole Miss did its best to get back in it. A solo home run in the fourth from Kemp Alderman, his 18th of the season, made it 3-1, before Harber sent one out of the park to add two onto Georgia’s tally in the fifth. The Rebels got two back in the sixth with a two-run home run of their own, but that was all the scoring that they could muster up on the afternoon.

Georgia added a pair in the eight to push the lead to 7-3 thanks to singles from Ben Anderson and Tate. That gave just enough room for Chandler Marsh and Leighton Finley to get the job done on the mound in the eighth and ninth innings as each toed the rubber to face four batters, getting three outs.

Georgia did not issue any walks on the day, something that’s been an issue for the pitching staff at times this season. Needless to say, head coach Scott Stricklin was happy with that.

“It is amazing what happens when you don’t give up free bases,” Stricklin said. “Charlie Goldstein was good again, and he didn’t have his best stuff today. That shows you how good he can be. He did a good job of mixing his pitches. He got a lot of quick outs and that allowed him to go seven innings. Parks Harber had the big home run to give us some breathing room, and I thought the two biggest hits were Ben Anderson and Connor Tate in the eighth. It gave us a little bit of space, and then (Chandler) Marsh and (Leighton) Finley were really good.”

Georgia moves to 24-19 on the season and picks up its eighth win in the SEC. The Bulldogs will look to take the series and chalk another one up in the win column on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET when Liam Sullivan takes the mound. The game can be streamed on SEC Network+.
