HOOVER, AL - MAY 24: 2022 SEC Baseball Tournament - Game 1 - #6 Georgia vs #11 Alabama

Georgia Baseball season is over, but a pair of the Bulldogs’ pitchers have received recognition for their efforts. Senior Jack Gowen was named a finalist for the National College Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball while sophomore Jaden Woods earned himself an invite to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team’s summer training camp.

Gowen is one of 10 finalists for the award after he went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA and 10 saves for Georgia this season. He was 10-for-10 in save chances including seven in SEC play. He served as a co-captain on the 2022 squad and will earn his degree in Consumer Economics this summer before weighing his options in baseball. A native of Folkston, Ga., Gowen has a year of eligibility left due to COVID, however, he could end up going pro too in the upcoming MLB Draft.

Pitch data darling. FB is 88-91 but pops in the zone thanks to big extension. Extension produces a low release slot helping the ball really play up in the zone against hitter. Gowen’s secondaries are a fringy curveball and deployable changeup that both could use some work if they’re to reach their 55 flash ceilings.

Prospects Live

As for Woods, he’ll be back at Georgia for another season in 2023, but not until he’s done with his summer tour of baseball. The Warner Robins, Ga. native will compete for a spot on the 26-man collegiate national team at a camp featuring up to 50 premier non-draft eligible college players June 30-July 4 in North Carolina. A five-game intra-squad series throughout the state will be the selection process for the final roster that travels to the Netherlands to take on Japan, Italy, Cuba, the Netherlands and Curacao during group stage play of Honkbalweek Haarlem. This past season at Georgia, Woods made 25 appearances tallying a 1-1 record, a 4.80 ERA and three saves. He led the team with 80 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .227 batting average. Woods will also play in the Cape Cod League, one of five Bulldogs headed there for the season that begins on Sunday.
