Georgia led early, fell behind by a couple of runs, then exploded for 17 unanswered to run-rule No. 23 Alabama by a score of 19-3. Brian Curley got the start and earned his fourth win of the season, going five innings and giving up two earned runs one two hits and four walks. The two teams will play again on Friday night with inclement weather expected in Tuscaloosa late Friday night and Saturday.

Senior shortstop Kolby Branch recorded three hits and five at bats, homering twice and driving in five runs. Sophomore first baseman Tre Phelps also had three hits and five trips. He had a double, a home run, and drove in six runs.

The Bulldogs drew first blood in the top of the first when Slate Alford went yard for the 17th time on the year. It was a solo shot and staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead.

Alabama answered back later, posting three runs in the bottom of the third to take a lead but that’s all it would get. The Bulldogs got back to scoring in the fifth inning and didn’t stop. Georgia posted eight runs in the top of that frame as Phelps and Branch both hit home runs. Hunter Henry also had an RBI double in the inning and Alford drove one in with a bases-loaded walk. UGA led 9-3 once the dust settled.

The Bulldogs got three more runs in, taking them to the cusp of run-rule territory. Phelps drove in two of those runs with a double and Branch plated him with an RBI single.

Georgia entered the top of the seventh with a 12-3 lead and it put the game away. The Bulldogs crossed the plate seven times in the inning with Henry, Branch, and Ryan Black all leaving the yard. Phelps also added an RBI as Georgia took a 19-3 lead.

Tyler McLoughlin tossed a scoreless sixth and Justin Byrd did the same in the seventh to secure the blowout win. Game two between Georgia and Alabama is underway and the two teams are tied at two in the bottom of the first.

The Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 nationally by Baseball America and No. 6 according to D1 Baseball. They are now 16-9 in the SEC and 40-11 on the season.
