Georgia baseball is set to host a regional for the second year in a row. Being in the regional is an accomplishment. Georgia head coach Wes Johnson has seen the expectations in his program shift in the last 12 months.

When Johnson took over in 2023, Georgia had only hosted two regionals (2018 and 2019) in the decade that preceded his arrival.

Now, Georgia enters tomorrow’s regional looking for more than a swan song. Georgia expects to compete for a championship in Omaha next month.

“I think it says a lot about our players and how hard they’re working,” Johnson told reporters You’ve got to have good players, man, to do this and win at this level and in this league. We’ve got good players. They come here and they enjoy competing. We put ourselves in this position. You’ve got to erase the board starting today. The board’s erased. It’s blank. You start trying to go on what we did last year, or what you did in the regular season. No, you’ve got to erase the board and start fresh today.”

Johnson feels that begins by coming out with and being proactive, and attacking the game in front of them.

“I told our guys, ‘hey, congratulations, if you win, you’re going to play at home, and that’s all you can ask for,’ but your focus better be on beating them on Friday night right here,” Johnson told reporters earlier this week.”

Georgia’s non-conference schedule has prepared them for the NCAA Tournament

Georgia has won 42 baseball games this season. 18 of those were against SEC foes. The other 24 games came out of conference. Johnson designed his schedule to have Georgia ready for an opportunity like the one that is in front of them this weekend.

Georgia will face Binghamton on Friday at noon. Duke and Oklahoma State are also in the Athens regional and will be a factor as well.

Johnson feels there is an opportunity to draw from the non-conference schedule.

“You play some good non-conference teams that aren’t in that Power Four or Power Five,” Johnson said. “You look at it, they (Binghamton) remind me a little bit of Columbia offensively. I thought Columbia could really hit, and they’re in this tournament too. We’ll be able to draw on some of that experience. You’re going to have to come out and throw strikes and be ready to get these guys out quickly. These guys can hit.”

Georgia will host Binghamton tomorrow at noon. Duke and Oklahoma get going at approximately 6 p.m. at Foley Field.
