Georgia baseball, Wes Johnson come to terms on contract extension

It doesn’t appear as if Wes Johnson will be leaving Athens any time soon. The Georgia baseball coach as agreed to an extension with the program according to a release from UGA Sports Communication. It takes his contract through the 2031 season “with an increased compensation package.”
Details of that package are not yet available. Georgia’s director of athletics, Josh Brooks, made the announcement.
“We are excited to announce a contract extension for Wes, Angie and their family,” Brooks said. “It has been incredible watching our baseball program thrive over the past two seasons. Wes is without a doubt one of the elite head baseball coaches in the country, and his commitment to winning at the highest levels is surpassed only by his dedication to making everyone around him better each and every day. We are excited about the future under his leadership.”
Johnson was mentioned prominently in the Mississippi State’s coaching search. The Bulldogs fired their coach earlier this season and the program has one of the richest traditions of any program in the country.
“I’d like to thank Josh Brooks, President Jere Morehead, and all our fans for their commitment to Georgia Baseball,” Johnson said. “We have received tremendous support from day one, and that is evident from the $45 million renovation that was completed this year that is vital for our player development, recruiting and the overall fan experience at Foley Field.”

The former LSU pitching coach, who spent time at the Major League level, turned Georgia baseball around with haste. The Bulldogs went 43-17 in his first season with the program and advanced past an NCAA regional for the first time since 2008.
Georgia hosted that regional where it beat UNC Wilmington, Army, and Georgia Tech to advance. As the No. 7 overall seed, it also hosted the super regional where it lost in three games to NC State. Johnson’s first team in Athens finished No. 2 in the nation’ in home runs with 151.
The Diamond Dawgs have been even better in year two. Despite losing leaders and offensive difference makers in Charlie Condon and Corey Collins, they finished the regular season with a record of 42-14. They also went 18-12 in the SEC and currently have the nation’s No. 1 RPI.
Georgia is also projected as a top eight seed in the NCAA Tournament where it would once again host a regional and then a super regional should it advance. Johnson has the Bulldogs slugging once again. This year’s team ranks No. 1 nationally in home runs at 132. It holds that lead by seven dingers over No. 2 High Point.
