Mike White has had an open spot on his coaching staff for a little over two months but it now filled. Georgia has hired Florida Atlantic assistant coach Todd Abernerthy per a post from his personal instagram. Abernethy has been with the Owls since 2019 and has ties to White.

“Coach White was my coach when I played at Ole Miss and had a huge impact on my life,” Abernethy said in that Instagram post. “He’s one of the reasons why I got into coaching and I couldn’t be more excited to join him at Georgia. Thanks again to FAU and the Boca community for everything. Go Owls!”

Georgia sports communication has since confirmed the news. The program released its own statement. It came after Abernethy’s Instagram post.

“I’m incredibly excited to reunite with Coach White and to return to the SEC,” Abernethy said. “Coach White made a huge impact on me as a player and has continued to do so throughout my career. He was instrumental in my development and played a huge part in me becoming an All-SEC guard as a senior. It’s no secret that the SEC is the best league in the country, and I’m thrilled to be back.”

Abernethy helped the Owls make the NCAA tournament for three straight seasons starting in 2022. They were bounced by Alabama, a two seed, in the first round of that tournament.

FAU came back and made a historic run during the 2022-2023 season. After making the Big Dance as a No. 9 seed, the Owls reeled off wins over Memphis and Fairleigh Dickinson to reach the Sweet 16. There they beat No. 4-seed Tennessee and took down Kansas State in the Elite Eight. Abernethy and Co. eventually fell to San Diego in the Final Four by a score of 72-71. FAU had a winning record in each of Abernethy’s seasons with the team.

Prior to his time in Boca Raton, Abernethy was the head coach for one season at Trinity International University. He helped led the program to a 15-15 record. He was also an assistant at his alma mater, Ole Miss, for four years under Andy Kennedy.

The program responded by making the NCAA tournament again in 2024. They lost in the first round to No. 9-seed Northwestern.

Abernethy replaces Erik Pastrana, who was part of White’s initial staff at Georgia. The Bulldogs are coming off their first NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years. The Bulldogs won 20 games in the regular season for just the sixth time in school history and got in as a No. 9 seed. They lost to Gonzaga in the first round.
