Georgia Basketball landed its third transfer of the offseason on Monday as South Florida big man Russel Tchewa chose the Bulldogs. A fifth year who was at Texas Tech for a single season before spending the past three with the Bulls, Tchewa has started 56 of the 59 games he played in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Tchewa, who comes in at 7-foot-0 and 280 pounds originally out of Douala, Cameroon, averaged 11.1 points and 8.6 rebounds this past season in 31.4 minutes. He scored in double figures in 19 games including three with 20+. Eleven times did Tchewa record double-digit rebounds with six also paired with double-digit scoring efforts for double-doubles. He had three straight double-doubles at the end of January and beginning of February.

“I’m excited to play for the coach and staff and want to contribute/help us have a special, special year,” Tchewa told On3’s Joe Tipton.

Tchewa was on campus for a visit over the weekend of Georgia Football’s annual G-Day spring game.

Tchewa joins Illinois’ RJ Melendez and VCU’s Jalen DeLoach in deciding that Georgia would be their next destination. Mike White and company also added 2023 signee Silas Demary Jr, the No. 60 player and No. 10 point guard in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking, since the 2022-23 season ended. Dylan James (No. 90 overall, No. 17 power forward) and Mari Jordan (No. 145 overall, No. 31 small forward) signed with Georgia during the initial signing period for the Class of 2023. The Bulldogs bring back Jabri Abdur-Rahim, Jusaun Holt, Frank Anselem-Ibe, Justin Hill and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe.

The addition of Tchewa gives Georgia 11 scholarship players for the 2023-24 season, a second under White’s direction. That leaves the staff with two spots left to fill, still pursuing several players with a couple of decision dates already announced.
