Georgia basketball working through layoff of its own

Georgia basketball has been trying to find something to do with itself for the last 10 days. The last time the Bulldogs were on the court, they ran over Florida State 107-73 in Tallahassee.

Georgia’s football team is about to experience something similar on the way to the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. Mike White and his staff felt the break from the basketball court was well timed and needed a bit.

The 8-1 Bulldogs will get back to competition on Saturday against Cincinnati in State Farm Arena. Georgia got some rest, locked in on their academics, and found a way to make practice as game-like as they could over the last week and a half.

“Our guys needed it physically and academically to give our guys a chance to really focus on finishing strong academically,” White told reporters on Wednesday. “We tried to have some high-intensity practices, tried to simulate a game-like practice a couple of days ago, we took a day off yesterday, and three-day prep starting today to prepare for a really good team.”

Georgia is growing into a new style of play

Georgia has grown a lot over the first month of the season. White came into this season with a different style of play in his vision.

The fast-paced style of play has been a hit for the Bulldogs. Georgia scored in triple digits twice last season. They’ve already done it four times this season.

In the last two games Georgia played, it scored 230 points. White feels the Bulldogs have a good feel for how to play with one another after nine games. The Bulldogs are playing unselfish basketball.

“We’re better offensively right now,” White said. “We’ve made a big jump here in the last two, three weeks. We’re just making some shots; our three-point numbers are still what they are. And I think that they’ll continue to increase with shot selection, the guys settling in. We’re playing with more maturity, and that starts individually. We’ve just got three or four guys just making better decisions, taking better shots. So we hope that continues, and we can’t just rest on that and assume it’ll continue, so we’re working on those things later.”

‘On to Cincinnati’

The Bulldogs will look to add one of those valuable wins that could be a resume builder down the stretch. The Bulldogs also look at Saturday’s matchup as a preview for the type of teams they will compete against on a nightly basis once SEC play begins in a few weeks.

Georgia will open SEC play against Auburn on Jan. 3 in Athens. The Bearcats head to State Farm Arena with a 6-3 record.

White has a lot of respect for the Cincinnati team.

“This is a great test for both teams,” White said. “The SEC is going to be incredibly difficult. Cincinnati fits right in. This is like an SEC opponent. We’ll take this one, and we’ll continue to grind it out and get better.”

Tip for Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m. at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
