Georgia catcher Daniel Jackson (25) celebrates after hitting his second home run during a NCAA Regionals game against Binghamton in Athens, Ga., on Friday, May 30, 2025.

After waiting on inclement weather to leave the area, Georgia put on a show in the first game of the Athens regional. The Bulldogs thumped Binghamton, the fourth-seeded team in the regional, by a score of 20-4.

Two different Bulldogs left the yard twice and both got it started in the first inning. Tre Phelps opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning. Daniel Jackson scored three with a dinger of his own later in the inning. Georgia never looked back.

Leighton Finley got the win, tossing 6.2 innings of two-run ball. He struck out seven while walking one and scattering four hits after being staked to a 5-0 lead in the first.

Finley allowed Binghamton to cut into that lead with a pair runs in the top of the third. Georgia got those runs back and then some when Jackson delivered his second three-run shot of the day. That made the score 8-2 and UGA just kept pouring it on.

Senior shortstop Kolby Branch, who had a grand slam in the Athens regional a year ago, delivered four hits and four at bats while driving in a pair of runs. He drove in those runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Georgia hung a quartet of runs in each of those frames.

Second baseman Ryan Black and outfield Nolan McCarthy, who saw action in both center and left field and hit a solo shot in the eight, each drove in a multiple as well. Branch, Phelps, McCarthy and Jackson posted multi-hit games, and Wes Johnson’s crew was heavily aided by 10 walks.

Slate Alford and Ryland Zaborowski, two of Georgia’s top power hitters, each had one hit but both walked twice. Phelps also had a walk to go with this four hits and Jackson pitched in with a pair of his own.

The win puts Georgia in the winner’s bracket of its own regional where it will take on the winner of No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Oklahoma State. Those two teams are set to play on Friday night, if weather allows.
