Georgia falls a few spots in a pair of top 25 rankings as end of regular season nears

Georgia is headed into the final weekend of the regular season, a three-game set with Texas A&M at Foley Field. When that happens, the Bulldogs will be ranked No. 4 by Baseball America and No. 10 per D1 Baseball. UGA has the nation’s No. 1 RPI.
Wes Johnson’s crew was No. 1 last week per Baseball America and No. 6 per D1 Baseball. That was before it dropped two of three at Alabama over the weekend. The Bulldogs won on Friday night by a score of 19-3. They run-ruled the Crimson Tide in seven innings.
Game two started that evening with Georgia scoring two in the first but Alabama scored the next six to take a four-run lead into a weather delay that lasted over 24 hours. Game two was concluded on Sunday with Alabama winning 9-3. Alabama won the rubber match 5-4 in seven innings. The game was shortened due to time constraints.
The Bulldogs have clinched a winning record in SEC play. They’re currently 16-11 on the season, puts them at No. 5 in the SEC standings. Georgia is 40-13 overall and it is 27-3 at home this season.

Its next opponent, Texas A&M, enters the final week of the regular season in a world of hurt. The Aggies had been showing some promise and took on MIssouri last weekend. The Tigers entered that series with an impressively bad 0-24 record in the SEC but it swept Texas A&M for its first three wins. Had the Aggies accomplished what Georgia and seven other SEC teams had, sweeping Mizzou, the would be 13-14 coming into the weekend with a chance to draw to .500 in league play. Now they likely need a sweep in Athens to gain consideration for the NCAA tournament.
Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 15. Game two will start at the same time on Friday and first pitch for game three will be 12 p.m. ET on Saturday. Georgia has likely locked up a top 16 seed where it would host an NCAA regional. It needs at least one win over the weekend and maybe more to secure a top eight seed where it would host a regional and super regional, should it advance to the round of 16.
