Georgia’s stint in Hoover for the SEC Baseball Tournament was short. On Wednesday night, the Bulldogs fell to Oklahoma 3-2 in the second round.

Georgia got on the board first but ran into one of the country’s best pitchers in Oklahoma’s Kyson Witherspoon. The Oklahoma star started his second game against the Bulldogs in less than a month.

He had similar success against the Bulldogs. Georgia was held to two runs, five hits and struck out eight times off the arm of Witherspoon.

Georgia’s offense had its hands full. The Bulldogs’ pitching staff kept things tight throughout the evening.

Georgia started JT Quinn on the mound. Quinn threw four innings, allowed three hits, walked one and allowed one earned run. Quinn struck out six hitters in a 70-pitch performance.

Georgia used three others to cover the nine innings of work. Matthews Hoskins, DJ Radtke and Brian Zeldin got the work on Wednesday night. Hoskins was tabbed with the loss after allowing two runs in his two innings of work.

The Big Moment

Oklahoma dealt its big blow in the sixth inning. The Sooners got two batters in scoring position and drove them in with two separate singles.

The Sooners rode Witherspoon’s strong pitching performance the rest of the way. He threw 107 pitches and 7.2 innings. A Henry Hunter home run in the eighth inning ended Witherspoon’s night.

The Big Picture

Georgia has all but wrapped up a top-eight national seed for the NCAA Tournament. According to D1Baseball, Georgia is projected as a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. That would put it in a position to host a regional. The Bulldogs are the No. 3-ranked team in the Baseball America rankings.

If Georgia were to win that regional, they’d host a super regional with a chance to advance Omaha for the College World Series.

Georgia will likely be back in Foley Field late next week as they begin regional play. Selections will take place on Sunday following the conclusion of conference tournaments around the country.
