DawgsHQ Game Day Show: Georgia hosts Missouri

ATHENS, Ga. — It’s a top 15 showdown today in Athens as Georgia, ranked No. 1 according to the AP and Coaches but No. 2 in the initial College Football Playoff poll, hosts No. 12 Missouri at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs and Tigers are both contending for the SEC East and a spot in the conference championship game next month in Atlanta, and the outcome of today’s game will go a long way towards determining that.

Last week, the Bulldogs took it to arch rival Florida, handling the Gators down in Jacksonville 43-20 to move to 8-0 on the year. It was Georgia’s 25th straight win, dating back to New Year’s Eve of 2021 in the Orange Bowl against Michigan. Meanwhile, Missouri was on bye last Saturday, resting up after a 7-1 start to the season that included a win over a top-25 Kansas State team earlier in their 2023 campaign.

“Moving on to Missouri. Eli (Drinkwitz) has done a tremendous job with this team. We thought they were really good last year when we went to play them, and that proved to be true, and they’ve gotten better,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said on Monday. “Their quarterback is very experienced, which is the number one quality you look for in a quarterback is how many games has he played in, what experience has he had, has he played on the road in our conference. He’s done all those things, and he’s done them really well. They’re using him and his legs and his ability to run really well. He’s a competitor. He’s fast on tape, and he’s playing at a high level, and he’s doing it with some weapons offensively.”

“They’re really good, defensively extremely aggressive, one of the best defenses we’ve played against since we’ve been here. Even last year they were just dominant, and just love the style of play they have,” he continued. “They’re aggressive and get after you, and they’re doing the same things this year. So all in all, a very well-coached team. They do a great job. Probably could be very easily be undefeated. That game was back and forth with LSU, and coming off a week off, we’ll need to get ourselves prepared for a battle at home.”

Kickoff time for today’s game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Georgia is considered to be a favorite, ranging from 14.5 to 15.5 according to VeagsInsider, and is given a 83.4% chance of victory according to ESPN analytics.

Pregame

  • Amarius Mims in at right tackle with the second team as Georgia does 11-on-11 work.
  • Travon Walker is in attendance today. Jacksonville Jaguars are on bye. Also see Kearis Jackson and Monty Rice of the Tennessee Titans.
  • CJ Allen going through warmups without limitation it seems. Don’t see Xavian Sorey though.
  • While we’re talking offensive line, Tate Ratledge wearing the No. 77 today.
  • Xavier Truss still running as first team offensive tackle. On that note though, Amarius Mims is a much bigger participant than he was last week. Could mean a rotation there.
  • Kick time moved back to 3:45 p.m. ET per Georgia radio’s Scott Howard.
  • Dan Jackson out there and going through warm ups after Kirby Smart told us about his injury situation earlier in the week. Could be big for the Bulldogs to get a veteran DB back against a passing attack like Missouri’s.
