Georgia moves up in final polls before selection Sunday

Georgia has made another jump in the Associated Press’s Poll and the LBM Coaches Poll after Saturday’s 28-7 win over Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

The Bulldogs are the No. 2 team in both polls. Indiana jumped from the number two spot to number one after a 13-10 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night.

Georgia earned its second straight SEC Championship. Head coach Kirby Smart expressed excitement over adding another SEC Championship to the trophy case in Athens.

“I mean, it’s one of the greatest championship games you can play in for a great conference,” Smart told reporters after the game. “So I have respect for that. Our administration, Josh Brooks, Jere Morehead do an incredible job supporting these players and helping them out. Then all the credit goes to the players who have had a very long, tough, hard season. The kids in our program buy into hard. I appreciate their toughness and the way they do things. That pays off in the long run. To win back-to-back SEC championships, it’s every kid in this footprint’s dream and honor to be at Georgia and be able to be the head coach here and win games like this.”

The Bulldogs and the rest of college football will wait for the College Football Playoff selection show later today. The 12 teams that will vie for a national championship will be revealed at noon on ESPN.

Neither the AP Poll nor the Coaches Poll has an impact on how things will shake out, but Georgia was the number three team after last week’s poll, and there appears to be a good deal of overlap.

If the polls hold true, Georgia will be a number two seed awaiting the winner of the Texas A&M and Alabama in the first round of the playoffs.
