Athens, Ga – Georgia went and snatched win number two right out of the gate on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs earned a 94-29 win over Maryland Eastern Shore to move to 2-0 in the early stages of the new college basketball season.

Maryland Eastern Shore was fresh off an overtime thriller with Georgia Tech on Monday night. The Bulldogs opened with a win over Bellarmine that earned head coach Mike White his 300th career coaching win.

“Good win, I appreciate the fans that came out and a lot of stuff we got to get better at, of course,” head coach Mike White told reporters after the game. “But a team that we, I thought we did a pretty good job preparing for, our guys have respect for this opponent, with them having accomplished what they did the other night, forcing overtime and Georgia Tech had a chance to win that game… I thought our guys did a pretty good job with one day prep; both teams had one day prep. But I thought our guys handled it with maturity.”

Key moment for Georgia

Georgia jumped out to a 6-0 run in the first minute and never looked back. The Bulldogs were aggressive defensively.

They forced 18 first-half turnovers. Georgia forced more turnovers in the second half. The Hawks turned the ball over 31 times on the night. The Bulldogs entered the year looking to press, and through two games, it’s been a key part of their success.

Georgia forced 22 turnovers in the opener. The Bulldogs also held Maryland Eastern Shore to 20 percent from the floor.

The Bulldogs shot 40.8 percent themselves, but the defense was able to create some easy points. Georgia was only 20 percent from the 3-point line, something Georgia wants to lean on this season.

Key Performers

Georgia got a solid night of scoring from sophomore Kanon Catchings. The 6-foot-9 forward put in 14 points on the evening.

Catchings came to Georgia this offseason from BYU. He’s been known as a skilled shooter, which he flashed on Wednesday night. Catchings also created some highlight dunks for others with his passing. The highlight came in the form of an alley oop to freshman Jake Wilkins.

Catchings led Georgia in rebounds with mome and assists with three.

Junior Blue Cain led with 16 points for Georgia. He had 15 points in the opener. Cain also swiped two steals and grabbed seven rebounds.

Georgia will be back in action on Sunday against Morehead State at Stegman Coliseum. That game will tip off at 2 p.m.

Key Quotes

Mike White on 3-point shooting

“I’ve got confidence that we shoot better than that. We just do. We shoot better than that in practice when we go against each other. We’ve practiced at a pretty high level of intensity, as do most teams at our level. It’s what’s needed to get better, of course. With our depth, you can imagine there’s a healthy level of intense competition in our practices. And we shoot better. I think it has more to do with pressing a little bit with the ball in our hands. Playing fast, it’s early season. We’re playing in front of our fans. They’re real games now. The guys are trying to establish themselves, as opposed to us establishing ourselves and taking our shot.”
