Georgia has lost a starting member of its defense. The school announced on Wednesday that redshirt sophomore safety Kyron Jones will miss an undetermined amount of time with a foot injury.

“Georgia redshirt sophomore safety Kyron Jones has been diagnosed with a foot injury that will keep him out indefinitely,” reads a statement from UGA sports communications. Under the guidance of UGA’s medical staff, he will consult with some of the nation’s leading specialists to determine the best course of treatment.”

Jones has started each of Georgia’s first six games, tally 24 total tackles. He also had an integral fumble recovery in UGA’s last game, a 20-10 win over Auburn.

The 2025 season is Jones’ first as a starter, and he surprised many by earning that role. With JaCorey Thomas, who has shared time with Jones at safety, and Adrian Maddox getting most of the preseason buzz, Jones trotted out with the No. 1 defense in the season opener against Marshall. Despite a few struggles he has held on to that role.

He signed with the Bulldogs in the 2023 class, flipping from North Carolina State. The Wolfpack were recruiting him to play running back, but Georgia convinced him that a move to safety was in his best interest. Jones primarily worked at the STAR/nickel position in his first two seasons of the team, moving primarily to safety during the 2025 off season.

As a prospect, Jones finish the 2023 cycle with a three-star rating per the Rivals Industry Rankings, a weighted average that includes all three websites that publish recruiting rankings. He was the nation’s No. 668 overall prospect and the No. 24 athlete. He was also the No. 20 player in North Carolina.

With Jones out, JaCorey Thomas is the odds-on favorite to earn the starting spot at safety. Adrian Maddox and Zion Branch, both of whom transferred into the program in January, will compete for playing time at that spot.
