Georgia TE Ethan Barbour has 'significant ankle injury'

Freshman tight end Ethan Barbour is the latest key injury for Georgia. The freshman tight end suffered a gruesome ankle injury in Georgia’s 28-6 win over Austin Peay late in the second quarter. We now have some clarity on the type of injury.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told the media on Monday that Barbour has a ‘significant ankle injury’ similar to the one suffered by Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint back in 2020 against Florida. That was called a ‘right ankle fracture’ at the time and required surgery.
That injury kept Rosemy-Jacksaint out for the rest of that season, but he was able to resume his career the following season. Barbour will also be headed for surgery according to Smart.
Barbour was blocking during a short-yardage play before the pile of players fell near his lower half. Barbour came to Georgia as a four-star signee in the spring.
He quickly landed a role in Georgia’s offense. Barbour started on Saturday. He also played a lot of the major special teams in the first two games.

Barbour was a big-time pass catcher on the high school level, but has played the ‘H-Back’ role and served as a key blocker in his two games in 2025.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart touched on Barbour’s injury on Saturday night, but did not have the specifics on the long-term impact or severity at that time.
“Yeah, it was a tough ankle injury,” Smart told reporters on Saturday. “I’m not sure. I mean, it was a bad deal. I don’t know what the progress is going to be or how long, but it was a tough one to see right there, especially on the last play of the half.”
Georgia opens SEC play on Saturday. The Bulldogs will travel to Knoxville to face Tennessee.
