Glenn Schumann reportedly impresses in completed North Carolina coaching search

ATHENS, Ga. — North Carolina’s decision to hire six-time Super Bowl winning head coach Bill Belichick as the next leader of its program made waves Wednesday night in the College Football world, but the fall out of the decision isn’t only in Chapel Hill. Coming out in light of Belichick’s hiring was the word that Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann interviewed not once but twice to be the head coach of the Tar Heels, and according to sources speaking to On3’s Pete Nakos, Schumann impressed.
It’s the latest in a growing list of positions Schumann has been considered for, and rightfully so. He was a serious candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator job in 2023. Now comes word of his multiple interviews at North Carolina. All of this is thanks to the work he’s done in nine years at Georgia under the direction of Kirby Smart.
“Glenn’s always been wise, innovative, a great teacher. Both his parents were educators, and teachers, and coaches, and you can see he enjoys being in front of the group, in front of the room, and teaching different ways, thinking outside the box,” Smart said less than a month ago ahead of Georgia’s game against Georgia Tech. “He works extremely hard. So he’s dedicated and spends a lot of time on his craft, whether it’s scheme, or fundamentals, or relationships. He was good when he started, but he’s just more experienced now.”
Schumann’s track record of success has been at the inside linebacker position, and on Wednesday, Georgia’s Jalon Walker was named the 2024 recipient of the Butkus Award. He becomes the third Schumann-coached linebacker to earn the honor as the nation’s best player at the position, joining Roquan Smith (2017) and Nakobe Dean (2021). Both Smith and Dean are starters in the NFL with Quay Walker, Channing Tindall, Monty Rice and Tae Crowder all enjoying some sort of success to their professional careers as well after being coached by Schumann.

Those type of names don’t just show up at Georgia though. They require effort in the evaluation and recruiting process. Jalon Walker ranked as the nation’s No. 4 linebacker in the Class of 2022. He was preceded by Smael Mondon, the top-ranked linebacker in 2021 and he has been followed by the likes of Raylen Wilson (No. 4, 2023), CJ Allen (No. 6, 2023), Justin Williams (No. 1, 2024), Chris Cole (No. 3, 2024) and Zayden Walker (No. 1, 2025). Schumann’s ability in that area is what has not only allowed the Bulldog ‘backers to have such success, but also what will lead to continued success long after he’s gone.
Schumann has long been considered an up-and-coming name in the coaching industry. At some point, it feels inevitable that he’ll be a head coach or an NFL coordinator. For now though, he’s enjoying the teaching aspect of hands on coaching with his incredible group of linebackers in Athens.
Georgia’s defense led by Schumann will be tasked with shutting down either Notre Dame or Indiana’s offense in the Allstate Sugar Bowl January 1st in New Orleans. The Bulldogs, champions of the SEC, earned the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the College Football Playoffs as they pursue a third National Championship in four seasons.
