Former Georgia player and current member of the football staff Jarvis Jones was arrested over the weekend for reckless driving and speeding in Athens. Booked Friday night for going at least 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, Jones was reportedly on the sideline Saturday for the Bulldogs’ season-opener against UT-Martin, a game Georgia won 48-7.

Come Monday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart commented on the arrest.

“There will be internal discipline. It’s a personnel matter. I can’t really comment any more on it.”

Jones starred at Georgia as an outside linebacker in 2011 and 2012, twice being named a Consensus All-American and First-Team All-SEC selection. In 2012, Jones recorded 85 tackles including 24.5 tackles for loss (best in the NCAA) with 14.5 sacks. He also forced seven fumbles, recovered two and came up with an interception on his way to winning SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

Jones has since returned to Georgia as a student assistant outside linebackers coach and player connection coordinator.

Jones’ arrest comes after an offseason that featured several Georgia players arrested for driving related offenses. Linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson was arrested for reckless driving and racing in February for an offense that occurred in January. Wide receiver Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint joined him with the same reckless driving charge in May, just weeks after De’Nylon Morrissette was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs among other charges. Then, in July, defensive lineman Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins was pulled over for speeding and arrested for a failure to appear in court for a previous ticket.

Former Georgia player Jalen Carter was also arrested in Athens prior to the NFL Draft. His arrest was related to the fatal crash of January 15th that tragically took the lives of two members of the program – Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy. Carter was taken in for reckless driving and racing and plead no contest to the charges in March.
