Georgia senior running back Josh McCray has been dealing with an illness that has kept him off the field since camp opened last week Kirby Smart confirmed on Wednesday.

McCray transferred to Georgia from Illinois back on April 20. He is expected to figure to be a key ingredient to Georgia’s rushing attack in 2025. McCray was Illinois’ lead back in 2024. He ran for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

However, illness has slowed his beginning of the 2025 preseason camp. Smart spoke to the media on Wednesday and touched on McCray’s status for the first time publicly.

“He’s good. He was a little sick under the weather, and we’re trying to get him back out there, so he’s been dealing with some sickness stuff,” Smart told reporters. “I think he’s going to be fine. Hopefully, with the weather conditions we’ve had, he’ll be back even faster because it’s not been as hot out there.”

McCray has been at the facility but has not been able to practice. Georgia is working to team McCray with a long list of young players.

Sophomore Nate Frazier is back as the leading returning rusher. Roderick Robinson is back after an injury-filled 2024 season. Redshirt freshmen Dwight Phillips and Chauncey Bowens are also in the fold, along with true freshman Bo Walker.

Georgia opens the 2025 slate with Marshall on Aug. 30 at Sanford Stadium.
