Berkley Binggeli’s last breath header stuns Purdue

Every athlete dreams of it in their backyard. The walk-off home run. The buzzer-beater three-pointer. The Hail Mary touchdown. For Berkley Binggeli, she likely dreamed of scoring the 90th-minute winner. On Thursday night in West Lafayette, with just seconds left on the clock, she didn’t just dream it. She did it. The sophomore forward played just 18 minutes but needed just one moment to give Iowa a 2–1 win over Purdue.
“All credit to our kids tonight for staying committed to the plan. They continued to put a high volume of balls in the box and rewarded themselves with a great goal to take home the points,” said head coach Dave Dilanni. “This league is a battle every day and we grew up a little tonight as a team. I’m proud of them.”
The 14th-ranked Hawkeyes controlled nearly every facet, outshooting Purdue 20–4, owning 63% of possession, and dictating tempo throughout. But as the clock hit the 90th minute, they were mere seconds away from settling for a 1–1 draw. However, every college soccer match has 5,400 seconds—and Iowa needed nearly all of them to find a winner.
With under 20 seconds left on the clock, the Boilermakers probably thought they had secured a draw. A deflected clearance by the Purdue back line came up short of midfield and defender Miah Schueller advanced the ball ahead to teammate Abby Skiff. The clock continued to tick down and there was only enough time for one more real chance. Skiff chipped one into the box and Berkley Binggeli got on the end of it, finishing with a well-placed header to give the Hawkeyes a winner with 12 seconds remaining in the match.
The first 60 minutes of the match yielded little in the way of excitement and scoring chances. That being said, the final half hour delivered plenty of dramatic moments, starting with a world class goal from the Hawkeyes in the 62nd minute to open the scoring.

At the time, it seemed as though a single goal might be enough to win the match. It all started from a cross by Elle Wildman. No one got on the end of it, as it skipped through the six-yard box and Purdue cleared it out of the box completely. Mississippi State transfer Price Loposer was the first to the clearance and while her intial touch was a heavy one, she regained possession to send a sizzling shot from well outside of the box past goalkeeper Emily Edwards for a highlight goal to put Iowa on top.
The celebrations barely ceased before the Boilermakers found an equalizer. In the 66th minute, Purdue earned a penalty kick, after Abby Skiff was late with a tackle in the box on midfielder Megan Santa Cruz and that sent her to the spot with a chance to tie the game. Iowa goalkeeper Taylor Kane guessed the right way on the penalty kick, but Santa Cruz found the back of the net.
Tied 1-1 after nearly 70 minutes, the match seemed destined to end in a draw, despite the Hawkeyes holding distinct advantage in every statistical category. The match hero, Berkley Binggeli, was able to net the winner on her birthday.
