BOX SCORE RECAP: Hawkeyes hang on to defeat Miami FL

A lengthy scoring drought nearly cost them, but the Iowa Women’s Basketball team will return to Iowa City with an unblemished 6-0 record. They let a double-digit lead slip in the fourth quarter, but an Amarachi Kimpson three-point heave at the buzzer did fall, allowing the Hawkeyes to escape with a 64-61 victory. They move to 5-0 all-time against the Hurricanes.
The Hawkeyes made five of their first eight shots, jumping out to a 12-4 lead, but the Canes responded with a 9-2 run to end the opening quarter. Miami FL got to the line for ten free throw attempts in the second quarter, but 3/13 shooting wasn’t enough to match the 22 points that Iowa put up to build a 36-28 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, Iowa extended the lead to 12 points three times, but couldn’t push it any further, with the Hurricanes going on a 7-2 run late in the quarter before a basket from the Hawkeyes made it 55-46 heading into the final quarter. Things got tight in the fourth, as Iowa did not make a field goal over the final 8:30 of the game, but Kylie Feuerbach free throws late were enough.
Iowa scored 64 points on 69 possessions (0.928 points per possession), while shooting 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the floor, 3-of-21 (14.3%) from three-point range and 7-of-10 (70.0%) from the free throw line. Ava Heiden led the way with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds, while Hannah Stuelke finished with a double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds. In her first start of the season, Taylor Stremlow added seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.
