It was far from the prettiest season-opener for the Iowa Women’s Basketball team, but they got the job done. A clunky, disjointed start eventually turned, and the Hawkeyes got things going in the right direction, defeating Southern 86-51 to open the 2025-26 campaign.

The Lady Jaguars physicality, combined with their press caused the game to get off to a rocky start with little flow. Southern knocked down four triples and trailed just 15-14 after the first quarter. Iowa used a 17-0 run in the second quarter to open up a double-digit lead, going into the half with a 37-24 advantage. It even took some time in the third quarter, but finally, a 15-5 run put the game into runaway territory.

Iowa scored 86 points on 75 possessions (1.15 points per possession), while shooting 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the floor, 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three-point range and 22-of-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line. Ava Heiden led the way with a double-double 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Hannah Stuelke poured on 20 points and nine rebounds. Chit-Chat Wright added nine points and seven assists, and Emely Rodriguez went into double figures with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Southern scored 51 points on 74 possessions (0.69 points per possession), while shooting 18-of-56 (32.1%) from the floor, 7-of-23 (30.4%) from three-point range and 8-of-17 (47.1%) from the free throw line. Zaria Hurston led the Lady Jags in scoring with 14 points, four rebounds and a team-high five steals.

The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Jaguars 52-21, pulling down 34-of-42 (81.0%) defensive rebounds and 18-of-31 (58.1%) offensive rebounds. The turnover battle went in favor of the Lady Jaguars, turning it over 21 times to 24 turnovers for the Hawkeyes. Iowa outscored Southern 43-19 in points off turnovers/second chance points.
